June 7th 2024 - the car was in to get some work done and I have no other transport other than on foot so, rather than walk home 3-4 miles, then back again, I decided to go for a wander towards the Den and see where I ended up.
I took the road alongside the burn for change, there are always Dippers in the burn, not a bird you expect to see in a town.
That went well, I never made it to the Den, I turned up a road I'd intended on having a look up since we got here, the road out to Johnshill from Alyth.
And there one was, on the wee dyke, right next to the road and above the burn that runs through town.
Ten shots and it was gone, scared off by a passing car. I wouldn't mind betting that most people don't even know they are there.
So, on up the road. It wasn't a particularly nice morning, this was 08:10 and I had no idea how long the car work would take.
I'd never been out this way before so had no idea what to expect, one thing I realised quite quickly, there were loads of birds around, not all waiting for me to take their photo of course.
Johnshill road is essentially a country road that leads out to a few farms and houses so it's tree lined, bound by fields, broom and gorse.
A Chiffchaff on the fence alongside the road was my first capture, lots of birds flitting around but not stopping.
I wandered on, watching all these wee birds flitting around but unable to get any shots, until I came upon a Roe deer just off the road in a tall grassy area.
She just watched me walk by, not bothered at all, I grabbed a few shots and carried on.
I spotted a Yellowhammer on an aerial and grabbed a couple of shots.
As you can probably tell, I wasn't getting many photo opportunities out here, not today anyway.
I was walking by a large field when ...
Hares lolloping around in the field next to the road.
Maybe a wee doze |
And that was it! Not the end of the walk, I carried on up to the end of the road and it started to rain, which I really hadn't planned for so I turned back. On the way back, a loose Spaniel chased the Hares away and the Roe deer disappeared as soon as I came round the corner.
Photo-wise, not a great walk but, I think it will be worth going back some time.
So! Back to the Cafe in the Square for a cuppa and a sarnie then see what happens.
